What is "Fearless Living"?

Rats, I was hoping for magic.

It's a pretty poor joke, and yet it is how I often felt when trying to figure out what was wrong with me. Why was everyone else so comfortable while I felt so odd and out of place much of the time? Can anyone relate? Does anyone else ever feel like the only one who doesn't quite fit, can't get it together, isn't quite as good as (fill in the blank)?

I became self-help junkie, reading one book then the next, each time feeling like this author really got me and I would get so many insights along the way. Then when I put the book down, nothing had changed. "Just imagine what you want and it will come," didn't work for me. How could imagining a solution change a real problem? I just could not wrap my head around that. I wanted an instruction manual for my brain - and I finally found one.

I will admit that the first time I read Rhonda Britten's book,

FEARLESS LIVING: LIVE WITHOUT EXCUSES, LOVE WITHOUT REGRET, it didn't help much because the one point that she made that stuck out to me above all others was, "No one can be fearless alone." In my sad, comparison filled mind, I had no one to ask. Fortunately, that was not my last encounter with the Fearless Living program. Years later, I attended a live workshop and that was the beginning of my transformation from a life governed by guilt, shame, and fear, to awareness, willingness, and compassion.

Let me start by saying what Fearless Living is not: it is not the absence of fear, challenges, disappointments, or mistakes for the rest of your life. It does not mean you will avoid ever disappointing yourself or another, or being disappointed by another ever again. It does not mean smooth sailing and a carefree existence for the rest of your earthly days. It is not the fairy tale ending of "happily ever after" with no thought or effort.

Fearless Living embraces fear as a real part of our lives while providing action steps to recognize fear for what it is - a response - and being able to move out of the reflex reaction back into conscious choice. Fearless Living is actionable tools we can use to process our feelings instead of running from them. When we can eliminate or at least reduce judging feelings as good or bad, we can simply identify them, dig for the underlying message, and choose what to say or do next. It is in the power of choosing that freedom exists.
